Almost nobody knows their daily kilowatt hours, and there are two ways to get at them. Your last bill is the quickest and the most accurate, because it is a measurement rather than an estimate. Counting appliances takes longer but shows you where it all goes.

A bill records the total and not the timing, so the split between daylight and evening is the shape of an ordinary house: about 61% of it falls after four o'clock. If you know your own habits differ, a pool pump on a midday timer or an EV charged overnight, move the two sliders afterwards.

What this does and does not know

  • Every retail plan we track is priced against the same modelled year, and the cheapest is the one quoted. We do not favour a retailer, and we are not one.
  • A week of weather is modelled, not an average day repeated: bright days, flat days and one very poor one. Without that the battery covers every night perfectly and the bill comes out far lower than any real one.
  • Free power windows are modelled properly, and they change what the house does rather than just what it pays: during one it buys hard, filling the battery from the grid for nothing so it has less to buy after dark. How much fits is the inverter rating across the window, less whatever the house is drawing, and no more than the battery has room for. That is why the same house can want a different plan once it has a battery.
  • Feed-in is credited at each plan's own rate for the hour, as published, and stops at the plan's daily export cap where one is recorded. The rates run from a 3c median to 28c, and the best of them carry no volume limit at all, so a house that exports hard can genuinely finish the year in credit. What those plans do carry is entry conditions, usually a battery or membership of the retailer's virtual power plant, and the plan data holds those as prose rather than as anything a slider can test. So treat a large credit as the arithmetic of a published rate, not as an offer you are certain to be accepted onto.
  • Daylight use and overnight use are asked for separately because they do entirely different things. Anything used while the sun is up is served straight off the roof and never touches the battery, so a house can get through a day far bigger than its battery and still reach 4pm with it full. Only the overnight figure has to come out of storage, and it is that figure, against the battery, that decides whether there is anything spare to sell.
  • Some plans pay a premium for exporting inside a narrow evening window, or credit a flat amount a day for drawing nothing during it. Both are modelled, and the battery will sell into such a window, but only what the house will not need before morning: a credit earned at 6pm is a poor trade for peak-rate power bought back at 10pm.
  • Discounts, demand charges, controlled-load circuits and plan eligibility are not modelled at all. Where a plan carries conditions, and the best ones usually do, they are real: a battery, a smart meter, or membership of a virtual power plant.
  • The usage figures are the single biggest lever here, and a slider is a poor way to know them. The appliance calculator gets closer; your actual bill gets closest.
